On August 12, 2004, The California Supreme Court voided the actions of San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom in allowing issuance of same-sex marriage licenses. The decision voids the nearly 4000 same-sex marriages performed in California this spring. The ruling is more about the process of Newsom's actions than about same-sex marriage; the court ruled that Newsom cannot ignore a state law (Defense of Marriage law, in this case) that he disagrees with.
