After the attacks of September 11, 2001, Thacher Proffitt & Wood was forced to relocate from its offices at the World Trade Center, and as a direct result began to enhance its business continuity plan to protect itself in the event of another catastrophe. Part of that plan included the safeguarding of the firm's IT assets.

In the event of an emergency, we had to ensure that lawyers and administrative staff would always have access to servers on the firm's network, and therefore the vital data and applications that run the business. We needed to make sure our lawyers could continue providing client services under any conditions, which requires constant access to our computer network. Because of these requirements, the business continuity plan had to include a method to constantly replicate all of the applications and data on our key servers in New York, to another location outside the city.
