Messaging Startups Draw Notice

Symantec Corp.'s acquisition of startup IMlogic Inc. underscores increased corporate instant messaging (IM), and highlights two small firms' major role as messaging technology providers.

With IM joining e-mail as a vital business-communication medium, Akonix Systems Inc. of San Diego and FaceTime Communications Inc. of Foster City, CA, are viewed as likely acquisition targets, with Symantec rival McAfee Inc. only one of several possible buyers, along with smaller companies offering corporate IM platforms.
