Online: 'WHO' Site Provides Health, Vaccination Information

February 28, 2006

For information about vaccines, visit the World Health Organization Web site, www.who.int/immunization/en/. The goal of the World Health Organization (“WHO”), the United Nations specialized agency for health established in 1948, is the attainment by all peoples of the highest possible level of health. Health is defined in WHO's constitution as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

The site offers access to position papers on Influenza and Pertussis, as well as a report on Immunization Safety, Immunization News, and a Safety Priority Project. The focus of Immunization Surveillance, Assessment and Monitoring is to monitor and assess the impact of strategies and activities for reducing morbidity and mortality of vaccine-preventable diseases.

The core activities are monitoring of the performance, quality and safety of the immunization system through indicators; assessment of the current burden of vaccine preventable diseases as well as the “future” burden of vaccine preventable diseases in terms of sickness, death and disability, as well as the economic burden; assessment of the impact of vaccination strategies, through ongoing epidemiological surveillance and reliable laboratory confirmation, as well as impact assessments in countries; monitoring of each country's immunization policies, particularly the vaccines used in each country and the target population for these vaccines (immunization schedules); and monitoring of the overall proportion of children and women who are vaccinated (immunization coverage) and ensuring that all districts of the country are well covered with vaccination.
