Massachusetts. Four bills are under consideration in the Senate ' S. 183, S. 184, S. 236, S. 237 ' related to privacy and ID theft. S. 183 is designed to raise citizens' awareness about their rights to privacy and to raise the penalties on firms that fail to protect privacy. S. 184 would create a 'Consumer Privacy Bill of Rights,' including the ability for consumers to freeze their credit accounts at no charge, without alleging an ID theft; meanwhile, S. 237 would authorize the same thing, but only for consumers who are victims of ID theft. S. 236 would ban people from ID fraud or use of personal information about other people, living or dead, for the purposes of fraud or harassment. All the bills are in committee. The House has proposed a new draft for an omnibus bill, H. 4775, that would combine features of all of the Senate bills; the House bill has been in committee since March.
