AI's Growing Impact On the Gaming Industry

By Katherine A. Baker, Jeffrey M. Kelly and Joshua L. Kirschner
December 01, 2023

The gaming and wagering sector has begun to cross paths with artificial intelligence technology in ways both predictable and unforeseen. As with other industries, AI technology inevitably has found its way into various components of the gaming experience. What is striking, however, is how AI is revolutionizing gaming for operators, regulators, suppliers and patrons alike.

Chief among these developments is the introduction of AI-predictive analytics into the gaming industry. Although the implications of this technology are plentiful, two areas of immediate focus are responsible play and odds-making.

As problem and responsible gambling policy industry expert Brianne Doura-Schawohl has noted: "Data and AI very much sit at the nucleus of the gambling sector. It's the engine that powers the greatest success for consumer engagement and retention. However, AI on a broader scale, and when harmonized with human expertise in addiction and behavioral science, can and should be utilized for responsible gambling purposes. Deploying AI into gambling platforms will create the safest and most sustainable market. The gambling world is continuously evolving and modernizing, and AI for harm prevention and reduction purposes should be a part of that."
