On Nov. 10, 2023, Abry Partners, a leading North American middle market private equity firm, announced that it had acquired Chambers & Partners for $449 million from Inflexion, the UK private equity firm that purchased Chambers in 2018. What will this mean?
Over the last five years, Chambers has modernized its operation and converted from publishing hard cover directories to an all-digital platform. At the same time, it continued to monetize various offerings while preserving, in my opinion, the integrity of its research. It seems likely that the move toward increased modernization and monetization will continue under Abry Partners.
On Dec. 13, 2023, Chambers responded to my request for information about changes afoot by saying: "We're investing heavily in modernising and structuring our research operations and process to lead to even richer, data-backed insight for in-house clients when selecting counsel, including providing recommendations for cutting edge issues in the legal and regulatory space, highlighting the leading providers of consultancy and technology services, and expanding our coverage into the lower-mid market and highlighting the best firms for local counsel work via our Spotlight Guides. For the legal industry itself, we're aiming to become the provider of choice for insight into law firm performance, such as our Leading Teams research which benchmarks operational competitiveness surrounding legal talent management." The Leading Teams research, conducted with Lamp House Strategy, resulted in a lengthy report on responsible business in the law firm context that is well worth downloading and reading.

Possession of real property is a matter of physical fact. Having the right or legal entitlement to possession is not "possession," possession is "the fact of having or holding property in one's power." That power means having physical dominion and control over the property.
In Rockwell v. Despart, the New York Supreme Court, Third Department, recently revisited a recurring question: When may a landowner seek judicial removal of a covenant restricting use of her land?
