Crazy for Fair Use

The Ninth Circuit has held that fair use is an exception to copyright law and not a defense, in the first federal appeals court ruling on this issue. The decision is the latest in the ongoing battle between plaintiff Stephanie Lenz and defendant Universal Music Corp. and affiliated companies (Universal). Starting in a rural kitchen in Pennsylvania, the case is now a landmark decision in copyright law that protects many home videographers.

Google Books' Fair Use Win

Rejecting a decade-long attack on Google's mass reproduction of millions of books as well as its presentation of "snippets" ' sections of works set alongside information on how readers can buy the books ' the Second Circuit decided that Google Books has a "highly convincing transformative purpose" and thus is a protected fair use for which the company cannot be held liable under the Copyright Act.

The Equipment Leasing & Finance Foundation's Q4 update to its 2015 Equipment Leasing & Finance U.S. Economic Outlook reports that investment in equipment and software is expected to grow 4.1% in 2015, which is down from the 5% growth forecast in its Q3 Update to the 2015 Annual Outlook released in July.
