Oct. 1. New York Gov. George Pataki (R) signed a law that will give same-sex partners the right to visit their partners in hospitals and nursing home, as provided for in the New York State Patient Bill of Rights. The law equalizes treatment of same-sex partners with those of married spouses. The bills had been approved by huge margins in the state's Senate (S.7688) and Assembly (A.9872-A) this summer.
