The Perfect Concept-Based Search Engine: WizDoc for Office

By Alan Pearlman
November 30, 2004

As attorneys we all know that information is power, however for us to ever use this power in a sensible manner, we must first be able to quickly, reliably, and easily obtain the necessary bits and bytes of information that we need. For most of us our computer's data, as hard as we try to organize it, never seems to be in the places that we put it, or we forgot to put it anywhere recognizable at all. Then each time we look for a document, a file, a whatever, we spend much too much of our, or our secretaries, valuable time in just the file location process.

Well now a new company ' Wizsoft (www.wizsoft.com) ' introduces us to a new and better way to search, called WizDoc for Office. Keep in mind that this product is more than just your normal search engine, WizDoc allows you to do a “concept-based” search using some smart algorithms and a two-step process.

In the first step you must index your documents by selecting just exactly the types of documents that you want indexed and where to find them on your drive. Now, remember that this program works with Microsoft Office Suite, and so the software has the ability to index Outlook e-mail messages, which includes any and all attachments, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files. It can also index Acrobat files, Web pages, text files, and even non-computer files, like brochures or business cards that you have previously entered. Also you must keep in mind that with your initial indexing job the more files you have the longer it takes to get this step done. Once this initial indexing completes, then WizDoc runs in the background and making additions to the index as needed.
