DuPont Funding Health Study As Part of Settlement
As part of a settlement in a suit brought by people exposed to drinking water contaminated by a chemical used to make Teflon, certain Ohio and West Virginia residents began being tested in July for injury. It is not yet clear if the chemical, ammonium perfluorooctanoate (a.k.a. C8), is carcinogenic or otherwise harmful ' that is what the tests will decide. If C8 is shown to be harmful, the $70 million DuPont Co., the maker of Teflon, has set aside to fund the testing will be augmented by up to $325 million to continue monitoring the health of those affected. About 80,000 people are eligible to take part in the tests, and each person who participates will receive compensation for answering health questionnaires and providing blood samples.
