Thief or Careless Surgical Team, the Technology Remains the Same
A study published in The Archives of Surgery shows that it may be possible to put an already well-used anti-theft technology to use in helping the medical community reduce surgical errors. The solution: a small ID chip attached to each sponge that can be detected with a wave of a wand outfitted with the same type of sensor used to prevent shoplifting. The study's authors ' two of whom own patents related to the tagged sponges and the other of whom is a consultant for the company that makes the wands ' reported a 100% success rate in locating the tagged sponges.
