Online Exclusive: Routine Upgrade Causes Serious Breach for Education Department

A routine computer upgrade gone awry caused Social Security numbers and other identifying information for about 6.4 million people to temporarily be accessible online, according to the U.S. Department of Education. The breach was in effect for about 2 days, from the night of Aug. 20 to the morning of Aug 22, when a caller alerted the Education Department to the problem, said a spokesperson. The department closed access to all online account information while it tried to solve the problem.

Subsequently, the Department determined that about 32,000 people who accessed the site during the time of the problem potentially had their information publicly available online. Those people are being contacted and being offered free credit monitoring for a year.

According to an Education Department media statement, the glitch created a situation in which a person who checked for information about his or her outstanding loans would instead see the full records of a different person. If the person re-entered information, the account of another person would come on-screen. And anyone who accessed his or her account would thus expose the account to the next site visitor.
