Joint Commission Seeks Greater Patient/Caregiver Understanding
Early this year, The Joint Commission (formerly the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO)) issued a white paper outlining the dangers patients face when miscommunication between them and their health care providers occurs, and it offers some remedies for the problem. The paper, titled ”What Did the Doctor Say?' Improving Health Literacy to Protect Patient Safety,' discusses, for example, how problems can occur when patients' and doctors' native languages are different from one another or when the patient and his family members are not versed in 'medicalese,' and miss the nuances of what a health care provider is telling them.
