New Hampshire Abortion Notification Law Repealed
The state of New Hampshire has repealed its law requiring parents of pregnant teenagers to be notified before their daughters can undergo an abortion. The law never went into practice, however, because soon after it was passed it was successfully challenged in the court system by Planned Parenthood of Northern New England, among other plaintiffs. The legislature acted to abolish the notification requirement some years after the courts deemed the 2003 law unconstitutional because it made inadequate exceptions for cases in which the mother's health was in danger. The lack of a 'health exception' was intentional because the law's backers feared doctors could easily bypass the notification requirement by claiming a health issue existed.
