Hematologists and other health-care providers are being warned in updated prescribing information that the blood-thinning drug Coumadin' may affect people in different ways, depending upon their genetic makeup. Those patients with the gene CYP2C9, which is implicated in the breakdown of warfarin, or with the VKORC1 gene, which helps regulate the ability of warfarin to prevent blood clotting, may need lower doses of the drug than patients who do not carry these genetic variations. The new label instructions describe specific dosing recommendations for all patients.
