Drugmakers Hold Back Test Results
Critics are asking why Merck & Co. Inc. and Schering-Plough, makers of the cholesterol-lowering drugs Zetia' and Vytorin', are sitting on the results of the drugs' clinical trials nearly two years after their completion. Because Zetia and Vytorin are known to increase heart attack risks for some patients, the question of whether these drugs are more effective than others now available on the market is crucial to health care providers and patients who are making treatment decisions. After reportedly being pressured by cardiologists and a reporter from The New York Times, the companies have agreed to issue some of the test results ' but not all ' in March.
