David Cahn, Chair of the Maryland State Bar Association's Franchise Law Committee of the Business Law Section, has invited Maryland Bar members and other franchise professionals in the Mid-Atlantic to participate in a task force for the purpose of comparing the revised franchise registration applications and FDD Guidelines (as modified by NASAA) to Maryland's franchise registration and disclosure law and related regulations. The task force also will identify inconsistencies and make recommendations to Maryland state officials as to how those inconsistencies might be addressed. The task force will begin meeting in May, after the 2008 franchise registration renewals deadline.

Dean T. Fournaris has joined Wiggin and Dana LLP as a partner in the firm's Philadelphia office. Formerly a partner with Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll, LLP, Fournaris will represent national and regional franchisors, manufacturers, distributors, and area developers. To a significant degree, Fournaris' hiring by Wiggin and Dana was precipitated by the decision of Joe Schumacher to leave Wiggin and Dana and join Goddard Systems, a franchisor in King of Prussia, PA. '[Joe] and I discussed who the firm should try to recruit to help fill his role in Philadelphia. This was a very important decision for the firm but also for Joe because he and others at Goddard would be working with this lawyer,' said Jack Dunham, partner at Wiggin and Dana and editor-in-chief of the ABA Franchise Law Journal. 'It took Joe and me about a minute to agree that Dean was the guy we wanted. Because Ballard is such a fine firm, it took us a lot longer to recruit him.'
