Detroit ER Doctor Is First In U.S. to Be Charged with Performing Female Genital Mutilation
Several government entities were involved in the investigations that led to the recent arrest of Detroit emergency room physician Jumana Nagarwala on allegations of performing female genital mutilation (FGM) on young girls. The charges were announced April 13 by Acting Assistant Attorney General Kenneth A. Blanco of the Justice Department's Criminal Division, Acting U.S. Attorney Daniel L. Lemisch of the Eastern District of Michigan, Special Agent in Charge David P. Gelios of the FBI's Detroit Division and Special Agent in Charge Steve Francis of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations (ICE-HSI) Detroit Field Office. According to the complaint, girls ranging in age from 6 to 8 years old were brought to Dr. Nagarwala's Livonia, MI, medical office — sometimes traveling across state lines — for the procedure. This appears to be the first case brought under 18 U.S.C. Section 116, which made FGM a crime.
