A Legal Primer for Making Indie Movies

  1. Development. Creating or capturing third-party rights to a story that can be converted into a script and then breaking down the script into a budget upon which financing for the movie can be arranged.
  2. Pre-production. Hiring the cast and crew, obtaining proper locations, constructing sets, travel logistics, wardrobe, etc.
  3. Production. Capturing the scenes/raw footage during principle photography.
  4. Post-production. Combining sounds, images and visual effects into a finished product.
  5. Distribution. When films are commercially distributed for public display, marketed and screened.
