The White House's AI Executive Order Has Teeth, But Does It Bite?

By Cat Casey
December 01, 2023

The Biden-Harris Administration rang in Día De Los Muertos with a sweeping "Executive Order on the Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence". Packing more tricks and treats than a suburban soccer mom, this sweeping order was ambitious, to say the least, artfully seeking to thread the needle and balance fear and desire when it comes to the AI renaissance sweeping the globe.

This attempt to regulate the meteoric rise of AI without stifling innovation and the country's ability to compete in the AI marketplace on a global scale was no small undertaking. The focus on mitigating bias, promoting transparency through red team testing and safeguarding privacy while fostering an open playing field on continued development of global leading AI systems was immediately lauded.
